Country Engagement

SHF works with countries looking to grow their sanitation economies and menstrual health markets, adapting its approach to the market maturity level specific to each country, and looking to leverage other stakeholders and investments to increase impact.

In 2023, SHF commissioned deep dive analyses into the sanitation economies of Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Uganda, with the aim of detailing the investment case and financing strategy for sanitation and hygiene, including menstrual health and public reform in each national context. Detailed analysis determines the current market status, and its potential, along with the specific budgetary, data, standards, regulatory and reform actions needed to create the right enabling environment to stimulate the market and attract additional financing.

Importantly, these analyses are serving as a resource for governments to decide steps and potential reforms needed to create a suitable enabling environment for sanitation economies and the menstrual health market to thrive. They also form the basis of SHF’s approach - identifying places where SHF can create a sea change of impact, direct and indirect through innovative financing.

In order to better adapt its unique model to specific country contexts; SHF is currently developing market maturity frameworks for the sanitation economy and for menstrual health markets. These frameworks will allow to decide together with countries which bottlenecks to address and where to place the emphasis to develop thriving local markets and will be launched at the end of 2024.

With ongoing programmes in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda, SHF is looking to collaborate with more countries in East, West and Central Africa, as well as South and Southeast Asia to scale its unique approach to sanitation economies and menstrual health markets.
